The International Centre for Birds of Prey is spreading its wings!
Not only is the Centre in Newent, Gloucestershire celebrating its 45th anniversary this year (2012) – but we are expanding.
The new branch of the ICBP should be open for this summer at the beautiful Duncombe Park in Helmsley, North Yorkshire. Headed up in Yorkshire by Charlie Heap who has known Jemima and the ICBP since he was 11 years old (over 30 years ago! Charlie has worked with the birds at Newent and at Drumlanrig Castle in Scotland; he has been the driving force behind the expansion.
After a somewhat stressful and prolonged planning application – we were finally granted full planning permission on 19th January 2012. Encouragingly we had unanimous support from the North York Moors National Park planning committee. We have been fortunate to have had enormous encouragement from Jake Duncombe and his staff at Duncombe Park, we are looking forward to working with them long into the future.
We have a beautiful site, complete with many wonderful veteran oak trees, and a truly great flying ground! We just need to build a few things - an Eagle Barn, a Buteo Barn, a Falcon Block, a Flying Birds Block, an Owl Block, an Education Centre and a Manager’s Flat. That’s just Phase One!
Once Phase One is complete, birds will be making their way up from ICBP in Gloucestershire to take up residence in North Yorkshire as a part of our dual sites. Eggs have already been laid at ICBP and we are planning on most of the young of this year going up, plus birds such as Grey Buzzard Eagles, Griffon Vultures, Steppe Eagles, Falcons, Hawks and Owls, so all the help we can get will be much appreciated by not only us, but the birds looking forward to their new homes.
So if you fancy spending your days wading around in mud (it will dry out soon!) wielding hammers, carting timber and generally helping us get going, please get in touch, we would love to have your help.
